Out of the Blues: The Gift of Song

The African American Composers Initiative will present its ninth annual benefit concerts on January 27 and 28, 2018, at 3 pm at the Performing Arts Center of Eastside College Preparatory School in East Palo Alto, CA.

The musicians of the AACI and guest artists return to the Eastside College Preparatory School stage to present the ninth annual benefit concert, “Out of the Blues: The Gift of Song.” The program celebrates the tremendous range and depth of music composed by African American composers through the ages— music that soothes, animates, and inspires the spirit.

Our 2018 concert will feature a rich variety of musical styles: exquisite settings of spirituals by Roland Hayes, Hall Johnson, and Harry Burleigh, masterful instrumental music by William Grant Still, captivating songs and instrumentals by Chicago-based composer Regina Baiocchi, delightful new works by John Robinson and Valerie Capers, jazz trio and ensemble with Capers, including her celebrated rendition of Strayhorn’s “Take the A Train,” and beautiful songs by Florence Price, Roxanna Wright, Andre Myers, Charles Brown, and Charles Lloyd, Jr.

Please join us to celebrate these marvelous composers and share the sustaining power of their music. In these troubled times, let this beautiful music unite us and lead us “Out of the Blues!”

Tickets available on November 15 at Brown Paper Tickets.
